Our Fragrance longevity in India (particularly Mumbai) typically ranges from 4 to 6 hours upto 12 hours. However, it depends on several factors:
BODY CHEMISTRY
Your body chemistry plays a key role in how a fragrance smells and lasts. Factors such as hygiene, health, stress, diet, and medications can all influence how a perfume interacts with your skin. Each person’s unique chemistry can alter how different notes are perceived, making a signature scent deeply personal and reflective of one’s identity.
CLOTHING
Fragrances tend to last longer on clothing than on skin, sometimes up to a full day or even a week. Cotton, in particular, holds scent better than other fabrics.
CLIMATE
Climate significantly affects how a fragrance is perceived. In hot weather, perfume notes become more intense, while cold weather slows their evaporation. For warmer conditions, light, crisp, and fresh notes are ideal, whereas woody, oriental, and leathery notes suit cooler temperatures.
Attars are highly concentrated form of fragrance whereas the Perfumes are diluted with solvents such as alcohol.
It is observed that attars generally have better longevity, whereas perfumes offer better projection in the air for the first few hours after application.
Attars tend to last longer as they adhere easily for a minimum of 4–6 hours, depending on the blend of fragrances. This is because they are oil-based, which allows them to cling to the area where they are applied. They are activated by the heat of your skin, causing the scent to radiate outward as your skin warms up. This is why attars are applied to pulse points—the fragrance becomes noticeable when someone passes by or comes close.
Perfumes, on the other hand, are sprayed into the air. When the solvent (alcohol) lands, some of it settles on your clothes and skin, while the rest dissipates in a cloud of fragrance around you. As you wear it, the alcohol continues to project the scent into the air as it evaporates. This means your boss, coworkers, or people nearby can smell your perfume even before they are close enough to speak with you.
Although perfumes project more initially, they evaporate into the air more quickly. Such is the nature of alcohol—when combined with oxygen, it dissipates.
Top notes provide the first scent impression of a fragrance once it has been applied. They are usually lighter, more volatile aromas that evaporate readily. Their scent usually lingers for between 5 and 30 minutes.
Middle notes, sometimes referred to as “heart notes”, make up the body of the blend. They may be evident from the start, but will usually take 10-30 minutes to fully develop on the skin. They are the notes that classify the fragrance family (floral, oriental, chypre, etc, see below).
Base Notes are those with the greatest molecular weight. They last the longest, and are also important as fixatives, that is, they help slow down the evaporation rates of the lighter notes, giving the fragrance holding power. Common base notes include oakmoss, patchouli, woods, musk and vanilla.
A fragrance which does not have traditional top, middle and base notes is usually described as “linear”
These terms refer to the strength of the fragrance, or more specifically, to how much high solvent has been added to the fragrance oils.
Eau de Parfum (20-25% perfume oil)
Extrait de Parfum (30-35% perfume oil)
Mostly it’s observed that Eau de Parfum has a greater projection due to high solvent whereas, Extrait de Parfum has a better longevity (compared to EDP) due to higher concentration of fragrance oils.
